BOOK CLUB

On-Going.........Third Thursday of each month..........Noon-1:00 pm..........No Fee

If you want to join a book club where participants tell you what they REALLY think about the book, this is the group for you.  We mince no words in discussing our likes and dislikes of a book.  We are a very informal group.  We don't have a leader, but take turns going around the room and hearing each persons views about the book.  This often leads us in to lively discussions of past events in the area or in our lives.  Before leaving, we vote on a book for the following month.

MARCH'S BOOK CLUB SELECTION
Meeting Thursday, MARCH 18, 2010 from Noon to 1:00 pm
In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick

The ordeal of the whaleship Essex was an event as mythic in the nineteenth century as the sinking of the Titanic was in the twentieth.  In 1819, the Essex left Nantucket for the South Pacific with twenty crew members aboard.  In the middle of the South Pacific the ship was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale.  The crew drifted for more than ninety days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger, disease, and ultimately turning to drastic measures in the fight for survival.  Nathaniel Philbrick reveals the chilling events surrounding this epic maritime disaster.  An Intense and mesmerizing read, the book was named the winner of the National Book Award.  (Non-Fiction)

APRIL'S BOOK CLUB SELECTION
Meeting Thursday, APRIL 15, 2010 from Noon to 1:00 pm
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation.  Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children.  In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains.  Later, when the money ran out, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town that Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape.  As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home.   (Non-Fiction)

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN

8 sessions............................. Begins Wednesday, April 28.................................................
7:30-8:15pm........................................... $63.90

Continue working with your dog to take their basic obedience skills to the next level.  In addition your canine companion is going to learn how to behave in a social setting.  The Canine Good Citizen course has been laid out and approved by the American Kennel Club.  These lessons teach your dog to mind its manners when out in public.  Skills your dog will be working on include sitting quietly by your side when you meet someone, sitting quietly by your side when meeting someone who also has a dog, allowing a stranger to touch it, not being overly anxious when you leave its sight, staying in place for an extended length of time, and learning how to be calm around unusual objects such as canes, walkers, or wheelchairs.  At the end of the seven sessions, you can voluntarily have your dog tested to see if it qualifies to become a Canine Good Citizen and receive an official certificate from the AKC.  Dogs are required to have previously attended an obedience class.  Class limited to 12 dogs, pre-payment is required.
