BOOK CLUB

CHIC FLEECE SCARF

COOKIN’ KUCHEN

Kuchen is a traditional German dessert with a sweet dough crust and custard filling.  Once you have mastered the basic kuchen dough you can create many mouthwatering treats, including cakes and pastries.  Martie Beck and Aurie Weeks run their own catering company.  They are sharing their expertise with you, teaching you how to make several kuchen treats.  Soon, you too will be kuchen in the kitchen. 

CSI CLARKSTON: Murder in the Mountains

Follow this intriguing and complicated crime from beginning to end and find out how scientific evidence solved the case.  If someone is reported missing, how can you prove that a crime was committed?  How do you find the body?  How do you know it was murder?  Can you prove it?  In class, you will learn how to lift a fingerprint and fill out a search warrant.  Retired Detective Sergeant Tom White will lead you through the chain of evidence to the stunning conclusion of the case.  Students must be 18 or older.

Whether you enjoy dancing or drumming, this class has what you want.  The first hour will be devoted to the fun and joy of dancing in the Middle Eastern style, learning belly dance and traditional folk dances of ancient Arabia.  Adding to the exotic flavor of the class will be learning how to use finger cymbals while dancing.  During the second hour of class, kick off your dancing shoes and pick up your drum.  Learn the rhythms of the Middle East, which are the basis for salsa, rock & roll, rhythm and blues, country/western and Christian music.  Yasmin will be the instructor for both classes.  She is a professional dancer and drummer who travels to several locations across the United States performing with the Ek Balaam and Hejira Middle Eastern bands.   Finger cymbals will be available to purchase from Yasmin.  The first three drummers to register may borrow her drums during class.
 

DOG OBEDIENCE, Beginning

In this class, you and your dog will learn basic obedience skills and practice exercises that will improve your relationship.  The exercises will include:  heeling on leash with automatic sit at halt, sit stay, down stay, coming when called and other commands needed to improve the socialization of your dog.  This is an excellent opportunity for you and your family to learn control and training of your dog.  The instructor is Randy McMullen, who has over 20 years experience working with dogs and their people, and is a long-time member of the Lewis-Clark Kennel Club.  You will need a slip collar (choke chain) and a 6’ leather or nylon web leash.  Dogs need to be at least 12 weeks old and the trainer has to be strong enough to handle the dog. 
Dogs do not attend the first session.

eBAY PART I: Selling Your Stuff

Do you have stuff just sitting around the house that you don’t want or need anymore?  Here’s your chance to clear household clutter and make money all at the same time.  eBay is used by 147 million shoppers, and has sales of $1,000 per second.  Setting up to sell on eBay is quick and registration is free; but you need to be aware of the pitfalls.  There are selling fees and potential risks.  William Long estimates that he has sold 2,000 items on eBay.  He will show you how to sign up for an eBay seller’s account and a Pay Pal sellers account and will make you aware of possible problems.  Happy selling! 

eBAY PART II: Listing Your First Item on eBay

This class is for those who want personal help in listing their first item for sale on eBay.  You must have already attended the “Selling Your Stuff” class or already have an eBay seller’s account.  The instructor will help you to list one item for sale on eBay assisting you through each step of entering the item.  Please bring the item you wish to sell with you to class and have a pre-written description of it.  William Long also will teach this course.  Due to the intense personal attention each student will receive, this class is limited to 5 students. 

ENVELOPE MAKING MANIA

Just in time for all of your holiday mail, learn how to create your own custom envelopes.  This craft is fun and easy to do.  Create unique envelopes for greeting cards, compact discs and letters by using intriguing papers such as road maps, wrapping paper, magazine pages, or pages out of old books.  Almost anything that can be folded can be turned into an envelope.  Jeanne Norman will be teaching you the folding techniques and providing ideas for unusual materials to fold.  Students will go home with several completed envelopes. 

GLASS NAIL FILE

Czechoslovakian crystal glass nail files are a revolution in nail care.  These files will not crack or split your nails, are easy to keep clean, will file natural or artificial nails and will never become dull or wear out.  Best of all, since they will last forever, the handles can be turned into stunning works of art that you can use for years to come.  Class will be held at the Stained Glass Shop, 832 Main Street, Lewiston, where you will use dichroic glass and crystals to decorate the handles.  If you can bear to part with it, the files make a great gift; or make two and get a discount.  All supplies, including files, are provided. 

GLASS ORNAMENT

Hang this beautiful glass ornament from your holiday tree, in your window or just about anywhere around the house.  Martie Beck will provide all of the materials and instructions for you to create an ornament out of clear glass prisms.  Sandwiched between the glass will be a collage of holiday scenes or symbols.  During class, you will create the collage and join the glass together by using a wire wrap and bead method. 

GHOST HUNTING

Take this class if you dare!  Join us, on the scariest night of the year, as we hunt for spirits in Lewiston (or will the spirits haunt us?).  Begin the night by fortifying yourself with treats fit for a ghoul and a scary drink.  We’ll give away some spooky prizes.  Then, Garry Bush, the owner and operator of Lewiston Ghost Tours, will be our spirit guide as he teaches us the history of the valley and takes us into two of Lewiston’s most haunted buildings.  Ghosts might be more inclined to materialize if you attend in costume.  Students must be 18 or older.  Class will fill up frighteningly fast, so reserve your plot early. 

HOLIDAY GLASS PRISM PIN

These pins will be a great addition to your wardrobe to help you welcome any of the coming holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas).  They are made by using a one-inch square glass prism and paper collage.  These pins are trendy and fashionable, yet easy to make.  Make one for yourself and one for a friend.  Once you learn how to make them, you can make several at home for holiday gifts.  Class will be lead by Martie Beck.  She is an experienced crafter who sells her creations at local craft shows. 

HOLIDAY WREATH

Welcome the holidays with a beautiful, decorated, artificial wreath suitable for indoor or outdoor use.  Everything you need to decorate an elegant wreath will be provided.  Choose your theme, decorate it and take it home with you.  Along the way, Jeanne Norman, our instructor and professional florist, will give you additional tips on decorating for the holidays, making bows and how to change your wreathe for use during different seasons.  Bring an artificial wreath to class with you. 

HYPERTUFA

What’s lighter and stronger than concrete and looks like stone?  The answer is hypertufa.  Hypertufa is a mixture of cement, peat moss and different aggregates that can be formed into almost any shape.  It weighs only one-third as much as concrete, but can be left outside in the winter, as it won’t crack like plastic or ceramic.  You can make hypertufa stepping stones, outdoor sculpture, fountains, birdbaths, fake rock; the only limit is your imagination.  In this class, Kate and Carol will help us create planters.  Class will be held at Patt’s Garden Center, 1280 Port Drive, Clarkston. 

INTRODUCTION TO THE HARMONICA

The harmonica is an instrument that is full of soul.  It grabs a listener’s attention, sometimes with fast moving rhythms filled with excitement, sometimes with heartbreaking blues chords.  Maybe you’ve purchased a harmonica only to become frustrated when you couldn’t get past the huff and puff stage.  Phil Harmonica (real name, Phil Malberg) is going to introduce you to all of the possibilities of the harmonica with an overview of different harmonica playing styles including blues, European and standard American.  You will learn the techniques for playing chords, single note, bending, breathing and hand effects.  Phil has been playing and performing with the harmonica for about 50 years.  In class, he will bring his guitar and harmonicas to demonstrate playing styles.  Students should bring a harmonica that is in the key of A.  Class meets every-other Saturday.  If there is enough interest, an advanced techniques class will be arranged.  

MATCHBOX SHRINES

Matchbox shrines are just plain fun to make and look at.  Use an empty matchbox, both inside and outside, to make a fantastic, whimsical tribute to an event, person or thing.  Ideas for things to memorialize include your pet, a birthday or anniversary, one of your favorite people, a special celebrity, and a hobby or even a sport or sports team.  The ideas are only as endless as your imagination.  The miniature shrines can be given to people as gifts or as a substitute for a greeting card on a special occasion.  They make a great decoration to hang from a car’s rear-view mirror.  Lou Carver, who has taught many art classes here at the Y and in Spokane, will be your leader.  All supplies provided.  Make as many as time allows. 

POSITIVE LIFE CHANGES THROUGH HYPNOSIS AND MEDITATION

The key to self-love and self-acceptance is working with the subconscious to bring forth a conscious awareness of who you are and what you want to do.  In this class, you will learn how to use self-hypnosis and meditation to make the changes you want.  This is your opportunity to begin to change eating habits, reduce stress, increase self-confidence, control pain, quit smoking, and more.  You choose your goal and begin to make improvements.  Class will be led by Julie Jacobs, who is a licensed hypno-therapist in the state of Washington.  She operated her own private practice in Seattle for five years. 

SANTA PAWS PET PHOTOS

Santa Paws is not really a class, but an event.  This is your chance to get your pet’s picture taken with Santa Paws.  All pets are welcome!  Pets that bark and pets that purr, warm blooded pets or cold blooded pets, pets that fly or pets that waddle; they are all welcome to sit or perch or stand with Santa.  Pictures are printed while you wait, in your choice of  5x7 or 8x10.  Reservations are not necessary.  The proceeds from this event benefit two organizations, the YWCA and the Lewis-Clark Kennel Club Spay/Neuter Fund. 

SIGN LANGUAGE: Fingerspelling, the Basis of Signing

Learning to fingerspell will start you on the road to learning how to communicate with the deaf.  During this three-hour class, you will learn the 26 hand shapes used in the manual alphabet.  This one-handed alphabet is used all across the United States.  A knowledge of fingerspelling is necessary to be able to sign in American Sign Language.  The instructor, William Long, has been teaching signing classes for 14 years and has interpreted for the deaf for 27 years.  

SIGN LANGUAGE: ASL, Signing Everyday Phrases

In this class, you will learn common phrases used by the deaf.   American Sign Language (ASL) is the native language of the deaf community in the USA.  It contains different syntax and grammar than English.  The signs represent concepts and not words, using fingerspelling when necessary.  By using these signs, you can start communicating with the deaf.  William Long will be teaching this class and the fingerspelling class.  To attend this class, you must already know how to fingerspell.  

STAINED GLASS QUILT BLOCK

Create a beautiful stained glass window hanging for your home or as a gift.  You choose the colors of glass to fit your décor, and then learn how to grind and foil the glass to design a stained glass hanging that looks like a quilt block.  This class is being held at The Stained Glass Company, at their new location, 832 Main Street, Lewiston.  The owner, Darcy Lodge, will be your instructor as you are introduced to the art of stained glass design. 

TASTE OF INDIA AND NEPAL

Learn how to cook some of the exotic foods of India and its neighboring country, Nepal.  Indian food is characterized by the use of many spices and herbs while cooking.  You will learn to create a Nepali salad, Indian curry chicken, momo, a beef dumpling made in Nepal, and lassi, a refreshing fruit drink made in India.  Change your cooking from boring into mouthwatering!  Class is being taught by Nepali natives Anuja Shrestha and Astha Lama. 

WIRE-WRAPPED BEAD PENDANT

Take one outstanding, large bead, add genuine silver wire, mix them together just right and you will have a stunning pendant ready to hang on the chain of your choice.  This class will teach you the principles of wire-wrapping.  The needed supplies and tools will be provided (chain not included).  Class is being held at Simple Reflections, 326 Main Street, Lewiston.  This is a wonderful bead shop, owned and operated by the class instructor, Anita Grimm. 

WOMEN’S SUPPORT GROUP

This group is open to women of any age who have been emotionally, physically, sexually, financially and/or socially abused.  Topics include personal safety, power and control issues, emotional and physical health, family dynamics, grief and loss, stress management, and building self-esteem.  Simultaneously, children of any age whose mothers are attending Women’s Support Group are welcome to attend Children’s Support Group.  This group uses creative techniques such as games, activities and storytelling to teach children who have been exposed to domestic violence and/or are victims of abuse about appropriate expression of emotion, anger control, communication skills, guilt, grief and loss. 


  ● REFUND POLICY:  A refund will be given to each student when the YWCA cancels a class.  You may receive partial credit toward another class if illness or accident prevents you from continuing with a class.  These are the only circumstances in which a refund will be given. 
 ●  REGISTRATION:  Pre-registration and pre-payment is important for all classes.  A class may be cancelled if the pre-registered number of students doesn't meet the instructors minimum requirement.  Not all classes are held at the YWCA, so please verify the location of your class.
